Organic & Non-GMO Chicken

 Organic & Non-GMO Chicken

It's no secret what the poultry industry considers to be acceptable treatment of chickens and other fowl. We've all seen the videos of tightly packed birds that are never even allowed to open their wings fully through their entire lifetime, which is extremely short by the way. It's time that we as human being take responsibility for researching our food sources and take action.

Farm-Raised Eggs

This is a project in its beginning stages. I'm trying to gauge profitability for a local farm in the North Houston area if it were run in an ethical way. I'm talking organic, non-GMO food, outdoor HVAC systems in the coop, pasture grazing daily. All these factors are being taken into consideration.

Yes, it will be more expensive than the grocery store, but this is food that is the epitome of fresh and clean eating. Food you can feel good about. The chickens will be catered to with the level of care that Kobe beef cows are treated in Asian countries. In fact, I'm deriving many of my practices from what I've learned from countries that never stopped treating their animals with respect, but have instead evolved with the times. This will ensure top quality eggs and meat.

I do plan on using the chickens to help launch me into produce as well. When allowed to graze in pastures or planted grounds, chickens both fertilize the land as well as consume all of the pests that typically eat away at a farm's crops. With the farm, I want all organic, non-GMO so having these chickens is imperative to long term success.

Planning for a Farm

The very first part of planning for me was starting a website using Google Sites. It's a temporary website, but gave me a hub to plan with. I've made a couple of videos so far using Canva (highly recommend) and have used them to start up a YouTube channel. I have a background in digital marketing so for me, it made the most sense to start with what I know.

I've also started a spreadsheet that outlines how we will start, beginning prices for materials, food, chicks, and more. Regardless on whether or not this ends up being a business at some point, I will be doing this for myself and my family so we can eat food that we feel good about. However we end up moving forward, I'll keep documenting just because I enjoy it!

Let's Talk Timelines

As of this moment in February 2021, we are living in a townhome with goals to move into a rural property with acreage by August 2021. From there, this startup will be able to move quickly if I choose to take this from a hobby to something more. It will likely never be a full-time career and I am very much okay with that. I can't wait to see what happens!
